Andrew Reid Wildman, Scottish Artist living in France

The Delicious Cake of Pears and Caramel (2019)

A cake of pure joy, a work of art in itself. Crafted slowly as if by alchemy, baked, presented on the finest crystal serving plate, the house infused from attic to basement in an invisible mist of pear and cinnamon and caramel. Who can feel unhappiness at such a moment, the thick cream ready, the […]Read Post ›

White Walls, Blue Shutters (2019)

This striking work depicts a house in France, basking in the glorious heat of a summerday, indolent, dusty. The flowers are in bloom, the windows closed, and dark, inviting us perhaps to imagine what lies inside. The scents of lavender and cypress, thyme and sage. A gentle whisper of hot wind, bringing its own messages from […]Read Post ›

Orange Shop, Blue Shutters (2019)

A strong heat begins to dissipate over the French city. Shadows lengthen now, dust settles, tempers calm. The air is infused with lavender soap, with the scent of roasting chicken, cold beer, red wine, rosemary and thyme. It is pleasant to wander alone, to explore, to own. Flowers grow, shutters creak, and the maze of […]Read Post ›

Haight Ashbury, San Francisco; Wacky Houses (2018)

A glorious slap of colour and architecture. These houses are in San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury quarter, a delightful place of bygone hippy days, though relics remain, with incense-scented air and a laid back atmosphere. I loved wandering here, with my camera and note book, connecting to an important time in social history. This small work […]Read Post ›

Londoners on Astroturf (2018)

A group of Londoners sit on some astroturf on steps, by the canal, at Kings Cross. It was for me a fairwell, as I had already decided to move to France. A hot summer tinged with sadness and excitement. The figures are not connected other than by chance. The work, based on photography, is painted in acrylic […]Read Post ›

Wash Your Car, Buddy (2018)

America excites. A wide, new land of promise, a land of neon. There is nothing that cannot be done if wished. A land of endless roads and movement. There is a slight feeling of nostalgia too, old 1950s films on a Sunday afternoon. Diners and Drive-Thrus, creamy shakes and the scent of sweet pancakes and […]Read Post ›

Gothic Corner, Amsterdam (2018)

I loved the architecture of this street corner in Amsterdam. I have been working on a series of summery works of the city and this is the latest. A summer of heat and intense light, of memories rekindled and exploring, of belonging. Amsterdam is a magical city, a place I have grown up with, dreamed of. It […]Read Post ›

The Carpet, The Sun, The Flowers (2019)

A luxuriant carpet is draped over a bench, against the intense backdrop of a white wall. The heat is palpable. Lizards scamper, flies buzz. Bees search sweet nectar. A bowl of pink flowers, as delicate as silk. Patches of shadow, havens of shade. The carpet is the queen here, a masterpiece of painstaking work, from […]Read Post ›

Dreamy French House (2017)

Envious, I must confess, I decided to paint this lovely house. It is a perfect house, under a perfect sky, a garden overflowing with bucolic pleasure, scents of jasmin and lavender. Heat. Light. Croissants and coffee in the cool garden under a tree. Peace. My heart ached at the brief glimpse. https://www.artfinder.com/product/les-andelys-dream-home/#/

Edinburgh, Corner of Canaan Lane (2018)

A famous Edinburgh landmark and watering hole. This is a corner of Edinburgh’s Morningside, a lovely neighbourhood, genteel and cosy. Inside is warmth, whisky and beer, walls that hum a thousand echoes. The work is rich in realism, and captures the play of light on the walls, under a cool Scottish sky. https://www.artfinder.com/product/edinburgh-corner-of-canaan-lane/#/
