Tribute to Annie Giradot

I grew up on the northern edge of France, across the border, in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. I was a rather confused boy, torn from his East Yorkshire nest and deposited in this strange world where my first impressions of life were foreign. I watched French films, at too young an age and well after the watershed, and was quite damaged by them, with their scenes of graphic sexuality, casual violence, homophobic language and earthy life and death themes. One of the stars of French cinema in my childhood was Annie Giradot, a woman who was the same age as my mother and who seemed to appear in all films playing a similar role. But recently I came to rediscover her and decided to paint this fascinating woman.
